NSW MK Network

About the NSW MK Network

The NSW MK Network is an organisation, established by MKs, which aims to connect MKs and TCKs together across New South Wales, Australia.

What is an MK?

MK stands for Missionary Kid, and refers to those who are the children of Christian missionary parents, and hence have been involved in Christian cross-cultural ministry throughout part of their lives. MKs often spend a significant part of their childhoods in a country or culture which is foreign to their 'home' country and culture.

What is a TCK?

Similarly, a TCK, or Third-Culture Kid, is one who has spend a significant amount of time in a country or culture which is separate their their home country or culture. TCKs are usually the children of parents who work overseas in a diplomatic, military, government, business, or similar capacity. MKs are a subset of TCKs.

The Aims of the NSW MK Network

The NSW MK Network was created to assist MKs and TCKs who are returning to Australia to make a positive cultural change as they integrate at home, and to help them develop and grow as Christians in a network of friendship, support, and encouragement. We implement this practically by running a variety of activities throughout the year - as a group, we try and meet at least four times in a year to have a meal, have some fun, get to know each other, and engage with issues relevant to MKs and TCKs. These activities are usually aimed at those aged 12-25 years; however, occasionally, MK/TCK Events are aimed at those of other ages. We also have an annual camp, where we hear from a speaker and enjoy each others' company for a few days.

The Network's official charter is as follows:

  • To aid MKs and TCKs in their cultural adjustments by encouraging them to embrace their past and strive towards their future;
  • To provide an ongoing network of encouragement, fellowship, and understanding between members;
  • To develop and deepen relationships with each other, with God, and with friends and family

An elected committee of MKs and TCKs is responsible for organising all the operations of the Network. The Network itself is affiliated with Missions Interlink.
